Dental sealants are the best way to prevent new cavities on permanent molars. Sealants should be considered at least for all children when their molars erupt. Dental sealant is a thin, plastic coating painted on the chewing surfaces of teeth. The sealant quickly bonds into the depressions and grooves of the teeth which forms a protective shield over the enamel of each tooth.
Brushing and flossing is a great way to remove food and plaque from your teeth, but it isn't always effective in cleaning out the deep grooves and ridges on the pre-molars and molars. Sealants protect these vulnerable areas from tooth decay, making it impossible for plaque and food to get in. We highly recommend all children receive this treatment early on.
